How to stop doomscrolling on Android

What is doomscrolling?

Doomscrolling is scrolling through feeds, news or social media well past the point of enjoying or learning anything, often while the content makes you feel worse. It tends to happen on autopilot, so the first step is simply noticing it.

Why is it so hard to stop?

Infinite feeds have no natural end. There is no last page and no bottom of the paper, so nothing tells you it is time to put the phone down. You have to supply the stopping point yourself, and that is hard when you are tired or stressed.

How can I tell how much I am doomscrolling?

Most phones show screen time, but time alone hides the pattern. A count of scrolls is closer to what is actually happening: 20 minutes of reading is very different from 20 minutes of flicking through a feed. Nudge's floating bubble shows your live scroll count over every app, and the history screen breaks scrolls down by app, by day and by peak hour, so you can see where your scrolling really goes.

What practical steps help?

These are general habits, not medical advice. If scrolling is affecting your sleep, mood or daily life in a way that worries you, consider talking to a health professional.

How does Nudge help me stop doomscrolling?

Nudge is a free, open-source Android app that adds the pause for you. It counts scrolls across all your apps, and when you scroll quickly it escalates in steps:

  1. After 100 scrolls within 5 minutes, the bubble glows amber.
  2. After 50 more scrolls, you get a notification.
  3. After another 50, a full-screen prompt suggests a short break. Ignoring it is always an option.

These thresholds are fixed in the app today; they are not adjustable settings. Each day also gets a wellness score that takes scroll volume, session length, unlocks, late-night use and which apps you scroll in into account, so a heavy day shows you why.

Does Nudge treat doomscrolling or phone addiction?

No. Nudge is a self-awareness tool: it shows you your habits and interrupts the autopilot, but it is not a medical treatment. To see exactly what the app can and cannot see, read why Nudge needs the Accessibility permission.
